This paper describes the analysis of Ryugu samples at J-PARC, from the development of the instrument to the analysis results.

Research and development of low activation neutron absorber Au-In-Cd alloy at J-PARC Material and Life Science Experimental Facility

At the J-PARC Materials and Life Science Facility (MLF), we developed an Au-In-Cd alloy as a low activation neutron absorber for reducing the activity of moderator assembly, and put it to practical use in the reflector and moderator. As a method to confirm the distribution of indium in the alloy, pulse neutron imaging method is adopted, and the individual element distribution is measured by focusing on the resonance peak of indium, and the uniformity of the alloy is confirmed.

Development of high power mercury target; Pressure wave mitigation by micro-bubbles

In the neutron source facility of J-PARC, protecting the structural integrity of the mercury target against the pressure wave attack which is generated by the injection of the high power proton beam is the most important issue to achieve the world strongest neutron beam. Previous off-line studies have shown that the impact force of pressure waves can be reduced using the cushioning effect of dispersed He micro-bubbles whose sizes are several hundred microns. Then, we developed swirl-type bubbler which can generate micro-bubbles in mercury, and fabricated the mercury target with the bubbler mouted in it. Also, by utilizing the advanced technique of micro machinning, we developed the reflective mirror and mouted it on the mercury target, which enabled the ${it in-situ}$ monitoring of target vibration by laser beam. As a result, the pressure wave mitigation effect by micro-bubbles injection was demonstrated in the operating mercury target for the first time in the world, and the 300 kW beam operation and the world strongest neutron beam generation were attained.

Effects of ion beam irradiation on the expression of glutathione peroxidase in cultured human retinal vascular endothelial cells exposed to L-dopa

We examined the influence of L-dopa on the inactivation of reactive oxygen species by glutathione peroxidase (GPx), which protects in human retinal vascular endothelial (RE) cells from free radical damage. We used ion beams to induce oxidative stress and measured GPx expression by means of real-time reverse-transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis. Exposure to L-dopa inhibited GPx expression in human RE cells. GPx expression in RE cells incubated with L-dopa decreased significantly after exposure to 50 MeV He and 220 MeV C, disturbing the defense mechanism against the L-dopa-induced production of reactive oxygen species. In contrast, 350 MeV Ne irradiation significantly increased GPx3 expression. The result indicated that there are the influence of ion beams on L-dopa-induced stress rather than the influence of L-dopa on ion beam-induced stress because GPx expression in L-dopa-treated human RE cells depended on the types of heavy ion used during irradiation.

This website is provided both in Japanese and English. It disseminates over 15,000 bibliographic and full-text records, such as JAEA's research results, academic journal articles, conference papers, technical reports etc. In this paper, the authors introduce the special website on Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station accident and discuss some challenging issues to develop archive.

Proteins, molecular machines that contribute to almost all living phenomena, primarily function in an aqueous milieu at ambient temperatures. It has been reported that proteins cannot function at cryogenic temperature cryogenic temperatures or at low hydration levels, which strongly implies that both thermal fluctuations and hydration affect protein function. In order to understand the molecular mechanisms that underlie cellular biology, it is essential to examine protein dynamics in aqueous environments. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) allows protein dynamics to be examined at pico- to nanosecond timescales.
